See the following personal stories of our scholars and how we helped them ...
One of our Scholars had already had an extension to her MBA duration, having got married, had babies, changed jobs and moved countries since she started her course. Only her thesis remained. Meanwhile she had changed her mind about her topic four times, and was lacking in confidence as although she was a good student she didn't regard herself as academic at all. She was quite desperate when she came to eurekaadvisor. Through regular weekly one-hour coaching sessions including practical feedback on her chapter drafts, she was able to hit the tough two-month deadline from start to finish and pass! "I would never have done it without your fantastic hands-on support!" she insisted.
Another of our Scholars was struggling with feedback from his examiners who had initially knocked back his thesis. He just couldn't understand their terminology and even after a short conversation with each of them, he was none the wiser and was beginning to panic. Eurekaadvisor came to the rescue, explaining the feedback in a clear and actionable way, and helping the Scholar to address each of the examiner comments in a step-by-step way, empowering him to rewrite his thesis and pass the final round successfully. "The examiners' comments were like a foreign language to me", our Scholar explained. "But when I talked with eurekaadvisor, it all became understandable and I could then make the corrections as required. I never thought I would pass, but eurekaadvisor gave me the clarity and confidence I needed!"
One of our scholars approached us not because he was struggling with his thesis – quite the reverse. He wanted more stimulus. He wanted to enjoy the process more. He wanted to be challenged. He wanted to go beyond the obvious and dig deep. His supervisor told him not to worry, he was doing fine. But the whole process wasn’t as intellectually demanding as he thought it should be. Approaching eurekaadvisor, we set up coaching sessions for him, where we constantly asked provocative questions and drilled down on every point. We knew he could respond, given the opportunity for dialogue. He then surpassed his own ambitions in his grade but – even better – he was back the following year having signed up for his Doctor’s degree!
Another of our scholars, an international student on a development aid scholarship, lacked confidence. She felt that all the local students at her university in Europe must be smarter than her. She was wrong, but she didn’t know it. She came to eurekaadvisor describing herself as “a bit of a duffer” and our first job was to convince her that she was much better and more able than she thought. She did need some help with her methodology and data processing, but it was more confirmation that she was on the right track than teaching her techniques – she actually knew what she was doing. At her thesis defense, one of her examiners was from her country and this put her completely at ease, especially when this professor told her how impressive her work was. Another satisfied scholar for eurekaadvisor!
